  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Novel Ninja -- Fabulous : One of the best written and most enjoyable stories I’ve read in quite some time. The prose is beautiful with a palpable rhythm, and the characters are multi-dimensional. Loved it. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mark Barrone -- I quickly cast aside the cynicism and thoroughly enjoyed these fascinating and well crafted characters : When I saw this title paired with a female author, I wondered if perhaps here was another female author who is offering to enlighten us on the dynamics of coping with age as a gay man. I quickly cast aside the cynicism and thoroughly enjoyed these fascinating and well crafted characters. What we see is how the gayness of a family patriarch, Barry, unleashes all that is good and bad in his extended family. Barry and his wife, Carmel are both highly intelligent, and quick to take advantage of business and career opportunities. As is often the case in real life, people who have this innate ability to move obstacles out of the way and be masters of their own destinies also struggle with their own large egos. When they meet their match, as Barry and Carmel clearly have in their marriage, they live amidst the wreckage of their unyielding personalities. They slog on defiantly, holding their turf, but never having a realistic strategy for escape. The author takes us into the lives of their extended family and we see how those personality traits invest in the offspring and further snarl any attempt Barry and Carmel have at resolving their own transitions to something better. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Brenda Herzberg -- A delight. A sparkling portrait of an old part of ... : A delight. A sparkling portrait of an old part of London revitalized by the West Indian community. A privilege to be guided into the twists and turns of Caribbean London by Bernadine Everisto whose light-hearted style belies the depth and intricacy with which she draws her characters. It is a sensuous book, the descriptions of food, of colour, of music, of human intimacy and love are written so well that one experiences them as well as reading them. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ann L. -- Oh Barry!!! : When loving the wrong man goes wrong for 50 years. You love and hate Barry at the same time. Evaristo is an excellent writer and her characters have depth. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Abou Fall -- A Good Story for Good Discussion with a book club or a friend. : I read this Novel because it was one of the assigned reading from my book club. I had no idea what the story was about but once I started into it, I quickly became interested as to where the author would take us. The story moves at a steady pace and describes the life of two man who struggle with their identity, how to manage that against a traditional family and find some level of happiness. I found the characters to be interesting, complex and none without some flaws. In fact this is what made them real to me on many levels. I would definitely recommend this book for a club discussion in view of recent trends in the US related to LGBT Equality. Though the story does not take place in the US, I think the struggle for equality is pretty much the same around the world. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2015 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ronald A. Ware -- Five Stars : a thoroughly enjoyable read...fascinating ( Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2017 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from T -- Good writing let down by unaddressed homophobia : The book is undeniably well-written, and Bernardine Evaristo is a great writer. However I found it a difficult read in parts due to the homophobia displayed by the main character that seemed to be written as humour and harmless eccentricities of a sweet elderly man. There was a lot of shaming of "camp" and non-masculine presenting gay men in the book. Given that this is such a major issue in the LGBT+ community, it was a shame that the book did not seem to acknowledge how wrong these thoughts of the character were, and seemed to be making a joke of it. It would have been nice if the character had had some revelation about how he was contributing to homophobia in society. It's a shame because the book was very well-written and dealt with an interesting topic, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. When the character finally goes to a gay bar, he is relieved to find people aren't being camp and are acting like "regular men". This is an extremely damaging view held by many gay men and it didn't like seeing how the book presented it as ok. It almost felt at points like titillating reading for people who weren't gay men, employing all the stereotypes from the gay community for the entertainment of others. I expected more from a book published in 2013. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 21, 2019 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from 1st renassance -- Don’t Judge this Book by its Cover. : From the book cover (I had the one with a picture of a mature man) you would be forgiven for thinking that Mr Loverman recounts the sexual indiscretions of a stereotypical heterosexual alpha male in his twilight years. The novel does indeed tell the story a love triangle, but one in which the protagonist Barry is a closeted homosexual, married to his Antiguan compatriot Carmel and with two grown up kids, but in a relationship with Morris, his lover of some 50 years. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from M. Dowden -- Barrington Jedidiah Walker : Meet Barrington ‘Barry’ Walker, who now at seventy-four is about to come out of the closet. He is married and has two daughters, and he, his wife and his best friend/lover Morris came over with others of their acquaintances from Antigua looking for work and a better life many years ago. The story is told mainly in the first person by Barry himself, although we do have a few chapters from different years which are written in an internal monologue style by his wife Carmel. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Arberton -- The History of Barrington Jedidiah Walker : Readers of conservative (with small c) views re sexuality, will probably hate this book. However, there are at least two good reasons for reading it. First the narrative which is swift and engaging. It concerns the relationships between Barry, a gay black man from Antigua, his wife and daughters and his friend Morris. Barry's long-lasting dilemma about whether or not to 'come out' and move home to live with Morris maintains a degree of amusing tension, exacerbated by Barry's fear of confronting his wife, Carmel. She is completely ignorant of his gayness and believes a: that he lacks libido and b: that, paradoxically he is forever going with prostitutes, when he is in fact with Morris. Later (spoiler warning) this leads to an amusing 'coup de theatre' when Carmel, near the end of the story, returns from her (abusive) father's funeral in Antigua a completely changed woman - in appearance, knowledge and attitude. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from J C Greenway -- A funny and touching tale with real, flawed characters at its heart : In Mr Loverman, ‘Human Valium’ Barry and his friend Morris start the book on the dance floor, two old fellas cutting a rug, while Morris tells Barry he is going to give up drinking and Barry determines to do no such thing, leaving him tiptoeing up the stairs after their night out, trying not to wake up his wife Carmel and cause the inevitable explosion. It could be a scene repeated across many households, with the twist that Barry and Morris have been lovers since their teens, keeping their relationship secret from family, wives, children and now grandchildren. Carmel is not quite 100% fooled, regularly accusing Barry of cheating on her. But with the years passing more rapidly, Barry has decided he wants to spend the rest of his life with Morris. The questions are will he go through with it – and how? ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 10, 2020 )
